"When a book is this ambitious, either it is a thumping success or it falls on its face. Happily, The Actual Star is a stone-cold masterpiece. It is one of the most moving novels I have read and surely a contender for major awards." Welp. 😳

Also, if you'd like to donate a copy of The Actual Star for someone who can't afford it, just go here. Put the book's title for "First/Last Name," and your own email, and the staff will know. $30 covers all costs for a hardcover mailed in the U.S.!

“As a story about the way all things break apart and break away, it is remarkable that The Actual Star holds together until the end. Byrne displays here an expert mastery of the techniques of the craft, using repeated themes as a vehicle for unique characters to come alive, letting their choices speak the points and counterpoints of a long discussion spanning centuries of history.”

Enjoying the opening chapters of ‘The Actual Star’ by Monica Byrne. This passage makes me want to go and collect other descriptions from books where a character ‘unpacks’ the future they’re in - like a collection of speculative ‘what’s in my bag’ (the old Flickr trend).

Happy Easter and friendly reminder that your guy Jesus was a brown-skinned anti-capitalist refugee from the Middle East who preached radical inclusion and love, railed against income inequality, and was brutally killed by the police state. 💁🏽‍♂️

  19. Of course I go to the Easter Vigil, and there is my high school boyfriend. We haven’t seen each other in maybe 23 years. And all his sisters who lined up with my sisters in high school. And all of their children. Of course. Alleluia. 🥲
