The bodies of 2 sisters from #Saudi Arabia were found in Hudson river, bound together by duct tape at their waists & ankles. Rotana Farea, 22, & Tala Farea, 16 “had recently requested asylum in the United States.” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/29/nyregion/sisters-dead-river-saudi-arabia.html … h/t @rerutled

How did the #Saudi embassy know the sisters had applied for aayuum?

Whoever told the #Saudi embassy that Rotana and Tala has applied for asylum jeopardized their lives. There is a reason - a danger they are escaping - that someone applies for asylum. When you tell the embassy of their country of origin, you further endanger them.

Imagine being a #Saudi woman who has applied for asylum in US today and reading this heart smashing and horrifying story of the bodies of the two sisters duct taped to each other and found on the banks of the Hudson River in NYC. This is fucking terrifying. What the actual fuck?

I await the coroner’s report on how the sisters died. Read my thread for background on what I call the gender apartheid that is at the heart of #Saudi patriarchy. There are too many examples. I’ve been writing about them for 16 yearshttps://twitter.com/monaeltahawy/status/1057266806128283649?s=21 …

The number of asylum-seekers from #Saudi Arabia with pending cases has more than doubled since Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman began rise to power: from 575 in 2015—the year MBS publicly began his rise to power—to 1,256 in 2017, according to the UN.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-18/the-khashoggi-case-and-the-climate-of-fear-in-saudi-arabia …

For an example of how foreign governments assist #Saudi Arabia in getting women who try to flee into asylum, remember the case of Dina Ali Lasloom who was detained at Manila airport until her uncles came from Saudi, beat her, dragged her onto plane w/mouth, hands & legs duct tapedpic.twitter.com/0DpjmqNkMT
