If they're paying well and paying overtime I don't see the issue.
-
1.) they’re salary so no they aren’t paid more 2.) employees don’t have a choice 3.) it’s ineffective 4.) they shouldn’t need to do his is they manage their development milestones well

You raise a good point. I'm unfamiliar with the industry's workings but is this not normal for extra hours being put in a few weeks before the launch of the product? 100 hours is a bit much for sure
-
Oh absolutely, crunch has been a thing for forever however like you mentioned this is excessive even by those standards. Also more and more current developers are realizing it’s not sustainable or reallybthat useful and trying to move away from it.

Well I learned something new today. Much appreciated for the response.

Although Photon is right in general, there is the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) which prohibits unpaid overtime for employees with gross annual salaries under ~$65k. A lot of people don't even realize that they're getting illegally underpaid, voluntarily or not.

Wow, now I learned something new today.

Rockstar is notorious for doing this shit. They absolutely view this as a badge of honor, not the workers, but the managers and execs. I’ve also heard from a former employee that they’re told it’s the price you have to pay to work on a rockstar game.

It's almost as if overworking your employees to the point where they're constantly in a state of being burnt out can have a negative effect on their work that they wouldn't have if they just worked regular hours

How much work someone puts into something should never be used as a measurement for how much it is worth. I could spend thirty years writing a book and it will still be complete trash both objectively and as a commercial endeavor.
