A Texas man who shot and killed a Texas State student after he unintentionally and negligently shot through an apartment wall received a 90 DAY SENTENCE.
Life has no meaning in Texas…
i love this; connie chung was my first boss, owned the newspaper in montana i worked for, and she’s a super awesome woman who is also hilarious and kind and thoughtful and would always bring us food when she stopped by. her legacy is incredible, she’s a true powerhouse.
I thought I liked this story by @conniewang — but when I started crying at the part where all the Connies meet their namesake Connie Chung at the story’s photo shoot, I realized I LOVED it THE PHOTOGRAPHER WAS ALSO NAMED CONNIE!!! I’M SCREAMING https://nytimes.com/interactive/2023/05/11/opinion/connie-chung-named-after.html…
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is more than double the size of the original game. It has long, engaging side missions that feed into the main story. I mainlined the story in 60 hours and I’m not even close to half finishing it.
This will take up my 2023.
Amber Heard isn’t allowed to write about being a survivor of sexual assault and abuse and has incurred the totality of society’s wrath while Donald Trump is able to parade the narrative he lost a defamation suit to yesterday as the crowd laughs and cheers.
I would argue that ‘making news’ is not our job; holding power to account is. And on that measure, the town hall last night was a complete and utter failure.
"You do not have to like the former president's answers, but you can't say that we didn't get them," Licht tells staffers, many of whom are angry about the town hall. "Kaitlan pressed him again and again and made news. Made a LOT of news." And "that is our job."
cnn and the national media continue to fail at covering trump bc he’s good for business. they need each other. it’s sick. it’s not journalism. see the nyt for example.
Covering Trump is "tricky and messy," Licht says, and it will "continue to be messy and tricky, but it's our job." He confidently says "America was served very well by what we did last night." Many CNN employees strongly disagree.
it's wild to me that journalists don't understand that hyperbolic circling of wagons anytime one of our friends does something poorly/dumb - these Trumpian declarations like "A better job has never been done in the history of moderating!" - undermines our collective credibility
CNN became a party to Trump's need to psychologically "undo" his defeat by getting the audience to applaud him *for being an assaulter.* The more approval authoritarians get, the more they feel emboldened to be even more lawless. This is why this "town hall" was so dangerous.
I hate that @CNN allowed E. Jean Carroll’s name to be dragged through the mud again by this terrible man. Sure she could sue him for defamation again. That doesn’t change the hurt & humiliation at the laughter, and at the knowledge that CNN was willing to expose her to this.
wasn’t a regular reader of heather armstrong’s work, but i hate the term “mommy blogging” for a lot of reasons — one of them is flattening women’s lives into categories that don’t count the same as “real writers.” and what she did was more complex than simply write a blog.
it’s also weird that when you’re falling it feels simultaneously like you can’t do anything and like it’s the slowest thing ever as you feel every potential injury on the way down but that’s a different concern
it’s weird to almost pass out and have your brain panic and scream “AHH what do i do” and then it sort of jiggles and goes “wait actually i know” and then getting yourself into the recovery position but that’s former emt brain for u
the fact that CNN is now Fox News Lite, and a fascist Afrikaner blew $44 billion to turn Twitter into stormfront, tends to demonstrate how important right-wingers think control of the media is

This #CNNTownhall makes me feel the way I felt the morning of 11/9/2016 when I realized just how many Americans find Trump's flagrant dishonesty and bigotry appealing.
We have ants and tonight at dinner:
My husband: Did you know ants leave behind a trail that we can’t smell but the cats can?
3yo: I can.
Me: No, humans can’t smell it.
3yo: *sniffing loudly* smells like ants.
What's a tweet that's so canonical in your mind you make shorthand reference to it, even if people might not know what you're talking about? (I sometimes just say "uh oh y'all it's gettin' kinda hazy" expecting people to get it)
George Santos, who's currently demanding stricter work requirements for Medicaid beneficiaries, is accused of fraudulently collecting unemployment benefits while earning a $120,000 salary, a felony offense. https://justice.gov/d9/2023-05/santos.indictment.pdf…
20yo me: “am i…do i become a woman who can only drink fruity little drinks cuz she can’t shoot whiskey?”
37yo me, 10 years sober: “well, yes and no. but you definitely never have to worry about men cheating on you.”
i wish there was a polite way to tell my neighbor how thrilled i am that i don’t have to live next to his subwoofer or loud late-night moaning activities anymore
The NYPD is coming out IN FORCE against anyone publicly protesting about the killing of Jordan Neely, and the fact his killer still walks free, or the NYPD's near-endless brutalization of the homeless.
Great reporting from
A jury has found that the presumptive 2024 nominee for the political party that's built a strategy around framing transgender people as a threat to women in bathrooms himself sexually abused a woman in a change room.
The court ruled in favor of Evan Rachel Wood and struck several elements of Marilyn Manson’s defamation claims against her, including some of the widely-scrutinized claims around forging an FBI letter and “recruiting” other victims with a checklist/script.
[Home Depot staff meeting]
BOSS: Someone has been breaking all the wood. Any idea who it is?
ME: [tightening my green karate belt] Probably someone pretty strong.
