Bustle Digital Group has effectively reduced the # of union employees by *half* in the last five (!) months — so it's never been a better time for to fight for the fair contract we deserve.

Our statement on yesterday's layoffs: #BDGFairContractNow
Show this thread
The Bustle Digital Group Union vehemently condemns BDG’s decision to lay off nearly 40 unit members and shutter Gawker. This is the third round of layoffs in the past five months. Over that time the company has laid off 75 bargaining unit members, effectively reducing the number of union employees by half.

For months the CEO has told staff and the public that the company is succeeding financially. These layoffs therefore came as a cruel shock to our colleagues and demonstrate the urgent need for a fair union contract, with protections for severance and just cause. In fact, BDG refused to bargain over the decision to take this drastic measure.

Now, we demand BDG bargain in good faith about the repercussions of this decision and offer the severance that our colleagues deserve amid historic inflation.

We stand united in support of all our affected colleagues and in calling for a fair contract now after two long years of bargaining.

This isn't my first layoff, but it's my first from a job I loved. I lost my job along with dozens of others today. Inverse is full of unbelievably kind and curious and talented people struggling under cruel and capricious management and I'm going to miss being there with them.

Well, after an incredible 1.5 years, BDG has decided it is done with Gawker 2.0. Can't say enough about how proud I am of the site and all the brilliant people who worked to create it, and what a staggering shame this is. I had an absolute blast, and I love you.

I'm incredibly excited and honored to announce that I won the Journalism award for my Elden Ring piece exploring how disabled players completed the newest FromSoft game. These games are notorious for being inaccessible, and I wanted to disprove that.

JOURNALISM! Congrats to @Super_Crip1994 for continuing to elevate the coverage of accessibility and disability topics in gaming. We can't wait to see more with your new @IGN column.

“At the moment I’m hoping it will be used for the best, but we also have to prepare for the worst — at least in some contexts,” Carola Westermeier, a political economist at Goethe-University Frankfurt in Germany, tells Inverse.
