In our recent AmNat paper, we find that standing variation in generalized stress responses (e.g., oxidative stress response) may explain tolerance of entirely novel toxins, facilitating host shifts and survival in new environments.

Yeayyyy! my last PhD chapter is published :) We found that, although strong spatial structure among populations of 4 species, riverine fishes in the Atlantic Rainforest present different divergence times according to species' ecology and river position!

Do ecological communities recover from pulse disturbances? Meta-analysis of >500 field/mesocosm exp shows that functional aspects such as biomass do frequently, even richness or diversity indices do, but species composition does not. 1/4

Why does America always seem to have trillions of dollars for wars, but basic things like raises for teachers, healthcare and social security are always in danger?

New NSF postdoc in IOS for "rules of life" genome-phenotype-environment integrative studies. Might be flexible how much genome is necessary. "No plans" for other, broader postdocs in bio soon; e.g. return to "bioinformatics" postdoc. :(

Fun to start 2020 with this! Awesome collab with LM Angeloni . Wild pedigrees & genomics showed genetic rescue in wild guppy populations w/out swamping local environment-associated SNPs. (summary below)

If increased work efficiency always leads to increased tasks and demands, efficiency is just gold plated busyness that can lead to burnout. I think solutions are unique to individual- being aware of thoughts and behaviors that precede burnout and adjusting expectations is key

Individuals change during development () & so should their . Yet we know surprisingly little about how niches change or how to measure these changes across species. I took a stab at this problem in a new paper

Here's a recent Nature piece with some good info on grant writing. BTW I'll be teaching the 1-week Grant Writing Workshop again this summer (probably late July), so feel free to contact me if you have questions or interest. It is a lot of fun!
