Only reading headlines and news stories, you would be forgiven if up until now you had thought SBF was a teenager still driving around on a learner’s permit, who picked up crypto trading to avoid high school summer jobs that might force him to go outside.

"The tech sector seems to be betting that these massive, algorithmically orchestrated firings will not only cut labor costs, but also once again remind increasingly empowered tech workers of their insecurity, and the power the companies still hold."

Especially since then, it's been very weird to read stories about how maybe he's a poor smol bean who made a whoopsie when most of us have managed to somehow not toddle our way into financial fraud at the fragile age of 30 YEARS OLD.

A while ago a reporter asked me if I knew SBF personally, and apparently sensing I was confused by why that might be likely, they pointed out that we would have been in college in Boston/Cambridge at the same time, so maybe would've bumped into one another.

Sam Bankman-Fried is continuing to cultivate this boyish persona. If he can keep it up, and if news outlets continue to fall for his narrative, perhaps he can sway not just some of the general public, but members of a jury.

We just tricked Dillon Danis into promoting a fake NFT project. We paid him $1,000 to post, he didn't disclose it was an #AD, and posted copy that literally spells out S.C.A.M.

Here's hoping enough lazily hacked together twitter bots were built with relatively reliable API so taken for granted that they just blindly retry on failure and will turn into an unintended DDoS botnet when you deny them en masse.

As a former Tweep, this is all really painful to watch.
That team worked tirelessly to restore trust with the 3rd party community, and now the rug is being pulled out from under those users.

Feel like not enough people are saying Elon is shutting down the twitter API to prevent people from using things like this to move to Mastodon

(it's not going anywhere — it doesn't use the API, though it absolutely should — just means the crossposting to masto will break if i don't build a workaround)

THIS! All of the bad bots & scammers are using scrapers and tools like puppeteer to do their damage, not the official API where twitter can inspect every request. Bad bots are going to take up MORE of your feed when possum every day is gone

Does this mean the primary way we can add captions to videos won't be available?
I use it multiple times a day because the vast majority of videos posted are not accessible to Deaf people.

when i'm working on a tool i'll look for an API if one's available, because it's polite, but then i'll absolutely resort to scraping if i have to
(looking at you etherscan lol)

i also wonder to what extent elon foresees that this may just push people to accomplish the same things they were doing via the API by less polite means
scraping, headless browsers, etc

otoh, i can still put effort towards making those tools solely for mastodon if i do find the time
well, really just the thread tool. mastodon doesn't have the cryptospam problem to the degree that twitter does to necessitate a filter tool

anyway, i'm glad i didn't put effort into a few of the projects i was thinking about.
i was going to make a tool to do a better job of threading on both twitter and mastodon, but now i'm glad i never got around to it. same with a spambot filtering tool i was considering.
