Men tend to collect fountain pens and Japanese notebooks. And obsess over EDC - 'every day carry'. Despite owning vast amounts of pens and notebooks, they never seem to use the pens to actually write or do journalling- just scribbling and doodlinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwv5HS60MTs …

There used to be this great YT channel run by an Asian American physican who used to be obsessed with collecting fountain pens. Had 100s of pens by reputable makers from France, England, Germany and Japan. Had encyclopedic knowledge He became completely bitter about his 'hobby'.

This is his channel, everything is privated now, but his last 10 videos were literally just video essays on getting older, his collecting addiction, fears that has children also had the hoarding bug, in the end it was literal Uncle Ted poasting.https://www.youtube.com/user/pelahale/featured …

Damn shame he set it to private. I would have loved to have seen his decline from fountain pen enthusiast to straight up Teddy K posts.

There was a time I used to be impressed by his videos on what not to buy pen-wise. He would literally whip out 1000s of dollars worth of frail, delicate artisanal Italian and French fountain pens in creamy Italian leather pen folders and boxes - raving on what was not worthwile.

Men get trapped by this. 'Vintage' watch collecting is another vulnerability of the upscale bugman. Or fine handmade clothing. And old cars as well if you are really rich.

I’ve seen the vintage watch thing and I’ve seen it ruin people. Literally bankrupt people who should know better.

Here is a funny story about a Norwegian stamp collector who paid some ageing porn actresses to ritually destroy his stamp collection on video - after he realized the futility of his 40 yr obsession.https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2017/jul/29/jon-ronson-bespoke-porn-nothing-is-too-weird-all-requests …

This is male autism channeled into the wrong directions. In a frontier society this energy might be employed to explore and tame the wild. Or in a Christian society to help the least well off.

You nailed it. These guys would have produced illuminated manuscripts in monasteries during medieval times.
