I am ECSTATIC to hear about the closure of the Beijing Bookworm. It was always a place for the pretentious. Trust fund kids typing on MacBooks writing bullshit lifestyle pieces for expat magazines nobody read. Just walking into the place meant you could feel the smugness.pic.twitter.com/fEXmWXMjwm

It was a festering pit of shit-faced Blue Checks and their grovelling wannabe groupies. A bunch of know-nothings calling themselves “China Hands” while jerking each other off and liking each other’s tweets.pic.twitter.com/YOA21MnkKa

This FB message - in complete sincerity - describes The Bookworm as a “safe space” Yep. It was a safe space alright. A safe space for the weak-minded to purchase mindnumbing books devoid of content and pat themselves on the back for buying reusable tote bags. Hakan we miss you.pic.twitter.com/wJ94srf2tf

Any place that includes the likes of obese shoggoth James Palmer and dried-up gaping cunt caverns like Leta Hong Fincher deserves to be demolished, destroyed and its remains expunged from this good Earth. Well done China for removing this insidious hive of smug mediocrity.pic.twitter.com/OEDwUlBqGo

We will all miss the hatchet-faced feminist roundtables and the efforts to promote what “people of colour” have to say about the China experience. My only wish now is for the Beijing govt to build a giant Xi Jinping statue over the remains to piss all over the Bookworm’s “legacy”pic.twitter.com/70Mj5EVivQ

PS: Before anyone thinks that The Bookworm was some holier-than-thou force for good, I can tell you all with 100% accuracy that they never paid small publishers for books sold & would ignore invoices regularly. They scammed many writers & publishers out of money Good riddance

Last word on the Beijing Bookworm from a friend: “The food was middling & pretentious - just like their customers. Elaborate desserts but no simple pastries or even cookies. What kept me coming back were the hot Chinese women who wanted to fuck white guys.” Says it all, really.

Completely correct; English language books in China best come from some combination of -Xinhua's dirt cheap literary classics -Bootleg Chinese editions -Foreigners who move and cant bother to bring their books. Expat bookstores are really only there to sell a lifestyle image

My literary classic collection expanded massively in China. So many Xinhua-edition Tolstoys with slightly-off typesetting!

Exactly. Also, the book selection in the background of your photos looks like a mix of Lonely Planet travel guides, young adult fiction, and mass market sci-fi & thrillers, which is pretty weak sauce for a supposed "safe space" for free thought & literary culture or whatever

Don’t forget the shelf dedicated to two dozen copies of Wild Swans replicas where a Chinese woman who emigrated to the US cashes in on her grandmother’s Cultural Revolution story.
