... The former is generally easier – learn the stupid etiquette of the organisation, talk about the right subjects, kiss the right ass, etc...

In law firms, with a few exceptions, it’s generally the latter that make partner (they also ingratiate themselves with the organization but only to the extent necessary). Yet most associates come in thinking the former approach is the key to partnership. Odd case.
