Interesting thread. I just got back from NK and had several conversations with the tour organisers about Otto. The general consensus was that he was drunk as it was quite a drinking group and he had been drinking late the night he tore the poster down.

Matthew arrived in Pyongyang and immediately tore up his passport and visa and said he wanted to be arrested. The Koreans and the tour organisers did everything they could to get him to go back on the plane but he refused.

He concocted a bizarre little notebook to try and pretend that he was some kind of spy. When he refused to leave Pyongyang they had no choice but to arrest him. He was sentenced to 6 years but was released after 250 days. He says he was never tortured.
