In less than 24 hours my office has received over 1,000 emails demanding that San Francisco defund the police department

That’s not what the word “defund” means. To defund is to stop paying for something, entirely.
-
Even if we were to fully defund the police (which may be the best avenue), we would replace it with alternative programs that do a better job, one of which would be a much smaller and properly trained group authorized to use force in those rare cases that need it.

The conversation has to begin, less funding for the Forces, more funding for social services. Not every situation needs force, most only need a helping hand.

The moment you get rid of any private security, walls for your home then we can talk about defunding the police

The only thing that cures poverty is wealth, and after almost 100 years it is obvious that social work has very little to do with increasing wealth.
-
We definitely need to be investing in Black communities to radically increase economic power. At the same time, we need services that better address the results of the current imbalance. We can and must do both.

You probably believe in fairies and leprechauns too.
-
Nope, just in our ability as a species to come up with better solutions to problems than we have today. It’s sad you don’t believe that too.

Ther definition of defunding is any removal of funding, not just total. As for common, it is used in approximately 0.00000110% of published work. Maybe "normal adult humans" should learn how to use their words.
