Great question! My understanding from Fred Turner's work is that Californian ideology has always promised individual freedom with one face and supported authoritarian forms of power with the other. Do you see a shift in substance or primarily in narratives?

I see a shift in both, probably too complex to tweet through! But short version: diminishing returns to ad-centered “attention economy” + new developments in cloud, ML > shift (materially) to more large contracts w gov’ts and (discursively) away from 90s libertarian anti-statism.

If 2016 splits the Californian Ideology into the new tech left and the new tech right, it still seems to be an open question what dominant form that new tech right will take—Thielite “national conservatism” is a possibility, but there are others

(this shift is also the subtext of so much of the hate-love for China coming from Thiel et al.)

Hi
@moiragweigel , tech nationalism and its relation to right-wing/ethno-state politics is already apparent in many places, including India and China. Whose right-wings are connected to our own. there's a funny parallel w/ historical left-wing thinking, where the belief that an inevitable historical force (in this case networking technology) would whither away the power of the state is replaced with a belief that the state must be penetrated & co-opted on its behalf
