@mode7games tbh up until about 2010 most RPGs also did this.

The planets do violate @IanHardingham's Law a bit: it shouldn't be immediately obvious to the player how the generator works

"Stuff is very hard at the start but then immediately gets easier" is also a weird curve inherited from survival games

Obviously there are some entirely weak elements: the sentinels are basically the most annoying enemies from an early 2000's FPS

But every time I see "the trading is shallow", I just think "yeah but I had loads of fun making 1 million units yesterday"

And if you don't like the planets at all, fine - the game will have nothing for you

This obviously has really frustrated people who have gone in looking for systemic depth

I think No Man's Sky is a reasonably "casual" game which wants to offer the sensation of a "hardcore" game in most of its facets
