There are psychos out there who will claim to be a party of 6 to get a larger table when they're really only 4

They’re not holding the table, they’re just metering the rate of seating walk-ins/taking reservations

Collective punishment.

Not even kidding, I assume they do it to discourage people from making reservations not everyone in the party can make. If they start seating partial parties, people might start *taking advantage*!

To encourage you to plan your reservation carefully and not stager out orders from a single seating.

what if someone flakes and your 5-top is actually a 4-top and we can pull away that extra table and seat a 2-top next to you . Also so your server doesn’t have to do a thousand trips to the table just to get everyone’s drink order.

Also we don’t hold specific tables for anyone. We update the arrangement in the book minute to minute based on walk ins and how fast tables turn (unless you’re super vip). It might be different for restaurants that don’t take walk ins at all idk.

Often people will claim a party of 6 or 8 when they only know 4 will be there, hoping some friends may show up (they probably won’t). Worse, when parties arrive at separate times, they often want to order before everyone’s there, and staggered orders ruin kitchen flow
