This piece's extended framing of "two equals who just couldn't agree" is extremely ill-conceived. Who in their right mind thinks Cuomo knows how to run a transit agency as well as Byford?

In more ways than one...the inside is a bureaucratic dystopia, aesthetically speaking. Guys with guns, security checkpoints, massive file capinets, visible airducts, and dust draped over a lavish marble interior. Reminded me a lot of "Brazil."

    The Manhattan Municipal Building?

Not a particularly thrilling site plan but it looks like a really awkward lot. In any case, 800 homes!

Here's a $600-dollar room, affordable to someone earning $24,000. That's "deep affordability" by the city's standards. And for people who triple up, a $333 bed. Does the city even subsidize units this cheap? Certainly not for immigrants.

A surprising amount of downtown DC looks like this: an underutilized 25' sidewalk along a street with no bicycle/scooter lane. Is it really so bad if someome is riding 10mph down it? I don't think so.

For every two affordable homes New York City *built* in 2019, it forcibly shut down one existing affordable home. That's not how you solve a housing affordability crisis.

How many subsidized units did NYC build in 2019? Cool, now subtract the 5,151 naturally affordable units the city shut down.

Also, this whole discussion is absurd in light of the fact that these machines don't have urban speed governors.

And I have to say, dang, what a fun and convenient way to get around, even with the bad street design! These things are an absolute game changer for DC.

Seriously, on the 90% of DC streets that don't have bike lanes (and in the remaining 10%, I didn't see any that are protected) you are forcing riders to go ~15 to ~20mph below the flow of traffic. Even bikelanes, you are going ~10mph slower than the typical bicycle!

How long before all of Lafayette Square is a no-go security zone?

    Weep, New Yorkers.

Capping heights in DC to preserve views of the Capitol, monuments etc. *might* make a tad more sense if every major corridor didn't already have a spectacular (and protected) view of them.

Just switched over my CityMapper, so I guess it's official!

Exactly. Take the Holliswood Rezoning (2003). R2 to R1-2. Same FAR, same uses. Just a contextual rezoning, right? The Furman paper thought so. But then you realized it increased MLSs from 3,800 to 5,700, in direct attempt to stop subdivision activity that was underway.

A cel-shaded, Xbox-exclusive Looney Tunes Power Stone clone. Still not totally sure if this was a real thing or a dream.
