    Thread says now is best time EVER to be Chinese w/relative stability and prosperity beyond anything in its 5000yr history. I saw this in rural communities across Yunnan. Govt legitimacy came from improved livelihoods, then reinforced by CCP propaganda. Not other way around.

    one major obstacle in China-watching is the vast disconnect between western experts decrying "China going backwards", "Xi dragging China into totalitarianism", etc. and the uncomfortable reality of - warts and all - this still probably being the best time in history to be Chinese

    As Ramadan concludes today on Eid al-Fitr, how has its observance shifted for Hui Muslim communities in China in the wake of Sinicization of religion and tightening regulations? My latest for on one of China’s largest mosques and Yunnan’s Shadian Massacre.

    Hukou system, land-use reform, poor education and low high school attainment rates, rising wages and closing factories mean rural residents may be living their best lives now, but the future is uncertain. New Rural Vitalization campaign must address these 3/

    98.9 million people lifted from poverty, or 70% of global poverty reduction in those 8 years. 1.6 trillion yuan from all levels of gov't, another 1 trillion from companies. Significant investment, significant gains. But much work ahead with structural inequities and challenges 2/
