trying out the JLC SMD assembly service for the first time. the website is quite buggy (it seems to have race conditions - it fails if you click thru too fast), but the price at least in part due to careful restriction of features is amazing. they only do low profile SMD parts,

Their part selection and capabilities seem a bit more limited than some of the other places - i.e. no BGA, etc.

yeah it's *super* stripped down. no mask color choices, nothing. but that's the genius of it! it's obviously somewhere between MVP and 'automate everything we can, remove all the choices we can't'. it makes assembly ~ free. I'm kinda in awe of the philosophy

Oof this is awesome. I tried to stick to their parts list, but it is so short it was prohibitive. I should come up with a project that fits those requirements.

I think an interesting middleground is to always get pcbs with all the fiddly passives done, basically populate as much as you can at the pcb fab, then the build time for non-supported parts is much faster at home...
