Thanks @ABDanielleSmith for speaking with us on Alberta radio about #carbontax. BC has the highest carbon tax in Canada & our CO2 emissions are going UP @770CHQR Don’t fall for the carbon tax - it’s not working in BC. Here’s costs & the budget doc showing ‘revenue neutral’ trickpic.twitter.com/s060ThzvnA

Have you factored in the population swell that BC has been experiencing the last 9 years? Also, carbon taxes are not just for emission reduction. They finance alternative energy initiatives.

I'll remember you said that when we both ponder and recall the most regressive tax in Canadian history: The GST. Was that socialist doctrine?

It was necessary to take the burden off manufacturers to make their goods more competitive globally. Yes CPC created, but Libs were on board. Also, Harper lowered by 2%. What I despise is the govt taking 60% of my income and somehow progressive believe more tax is appropriate.

Maybe have an incentive to reduce rather than a penalty for consumption. I'm not sure how it would be fashioned though. I will say that the reason I replaced my windows this past fall was because of the rebate from carbon tax revenues.

Gee tt you got personal and simply because we disagree on this point. Objectivity would be a good addition to your twitter protocols. Let's talk in a year when you are up to your eyeballs in user fees, healthcare premiums, and spiteful cuts.

That "population swell" should translate into more people paying the carbon tax meaning more carbon tax being collected, no?

I'm not sure why you would say that. If there are more people using gasoline and oil wouldn't that affect the stats?

True, then it should follow that the carbon tax needs to be higher, right?

Certainly not. Ultimately emissions will reduce as alternate energies are more mainstream I suppose.

Ultimately, yes. Unfortunately for Canadians our current governments have a different view of how and when "emissions will reduce as alternate energies are more mainstream". If they even knew how to build a cart they'd still put it in front of the horse.

So the key to lowering CO2 emissions is to increase the population to base the calculation on a per capita metric? On that basis China and India are the cleanest jurisdictions in the world.

Not saying that. Just questioning (as we all should) stats where a political lobby is the motivation. I'm not sure what the answer is to the carbon emission issue. It's interesting however that many of the big oil leaders want a carbon tax.

I don’t mind paying a carbon tax IF it actually goes to programs that increase efficiency and foster new technologies. I’ve yet to see any proof BC’s carbon tax does this, especially now that it goes into general revenue.
