Growin up Muslim in post-9/11 America during middle school was hard. You know who always had my back? The queer kids & teachers who know the pain of being “othered” all too well.

During the last few days, various prominent left-wing critics of my stances on LGBQ have accused me of being, amongst other things, a radical cleric, a stealth-jihadist, an enabler of genocide, a supporter of al-Qaeda (!!), a teacher of suicide bombers, a misogynist, and a… Show more

homosexuality has literally bothered no one since the dawn of Islam. muslims in medieval times were more tolerant of gay and transgender ppl than they are now. very insane and disappointing but not surprising to see wannabe westerners begging for acceptance regurgitate the same

I think Muslim homophobes don't want to resolve the question of queer muslim rights because that would mean they could no longer talk about anal sex. Anyone who reads erotic lit knows that the only thing next to actually doing it is visualizing it. They're constantly talking anal

Allamah Hafsa, does the Shafai madhhab allow a Muslim man to insert his penis in the butt of a Muslim man? Perhaps it is Mandub?

This is trivial but if you use diacritics in Twitter debates, it is the weirdest goofiest flex and I am immediately unable to take you seriously. Thanks for that dot under the H, I didn’t know which Muhammad you meant,

when Unity Mosque was being created the co-founder spoke with a few religious leaders and Yasir Qadhi said that he did not want LGBT Muslims who were trying to find a connection to Allah and Islam to set foot in his mosque so Unity should take them off his hands

someone show this dude the diversity and non-conformity that exists *within* Islam too, see what happens [and I don't mean the "we have 4 flavors of Sunni fiqh" brand of diversity, either]
Quote Tweet
This is what happens when your political ideology becomes more important than your religion. It was always going to lead to this. Even the “Muslim” lefties will eventually cannibalize one another. The thing they can’t tolerate the most is ideological diversity and non-conformity… twitter.com/yasirqadhi/sta… Show more

Weird, because I literally can't find anything from you cautioning Muslims about aligning with the fascist, Muslim banning right.

You’re supposed to be a journalist Wajahat. Be precise. I never said they’re the same. Each has its issues, and we need to be aware of the pros/cons & agendas of both. It is my belief that Muslims shouldn’t unconditionally ally with any one side. twitter.com/wajahatali/sta…

To be clear, I don't even throw out fiqh altogether. I do benefit from it. But yeah, human scholarly effort that can be historicized. Sometimes I just have to say, "thanks for the guidelines about fasting but it's still a no on raping slaves."

Just saying, again: Islam =/= "Islamic jurisprudence." There are Islamic histories outside "orthodoxy" as these guys define it. Whatevs.
Quote Tweet
1) Do not falter in unequivocally rejecting this lifestyle. There is absolutely no room to validate it in Islām. There has been literally ZERO difference of opinion on this in the entire history of Islamic jurisprudence.

"Claiming to be Muslim" May he be judged as harshly as he judges others. May he be shown compassion from his Lord in the same miniscule amount that he has shown others. May all his hateful words and deeds follow him forever.

Yasir Qadhi believes both evolution and lgbt are an affront to Islamic teachings. But when evolution is taught in schools he is a churchmouse. When the lgbt community is acknowledged he becomes a roaring tiger. Why?
Quote Tweet
Yasir Qadhi denies evolution and will in all likelihood partner with Evangelicals on this in the future as he continues his grift. This is what a @Yale education looks like nowadays. @YasirQadhi

Why do you make it an either-or scenario? All of the issues you listed are also issues we are concerned with. But this one is affecting us directly in public schools, right here and now. As well, there is an added danger in this one that is absent in the others: the notion that… Show more

"In 2010, more than 150 Orthodox rabbis and educators signed a declaration calling for the welcoming of LGBTQ Jews in the Orthodox community." While 150 Muslim Orthodox clerics called queer Muslims sinners & accused them of committing kufr for refusing to see themselves as such.

Making extremely political statements and then hiding behind “I’m not an activist” to escape accountability is such a tired formula.

I'm not an activist: never have been, never plan to be. Let the activists strategize, but it is my job as a person of faith to remind them that any alliance in which we must compromise our fundamental is not a blessed alliance, and hence is not worth it (spiritually speaking) in… Show more

weird homophobic slur I got here: "Ahl al-Huroof." I first misunderstood, thought they were calling me an esoteric lettrist like the Hurufiyya. Took me a minute, well played.

therein lay the problem. why would i take my faith from a full blown fascist? I think this habit of Muslims to pick and choose the good parts of the jurist class to uphold is normalizing fascism. At some point you got to draw a line and be clear on who’s side you’re on

If American Muslims want to learn about Seera or something from Qadhi that’s one thing (my own kids listened to his lectures this Ramadan) but to follow his advice on politics will truly be a disaster; I wish these scholars had the humility to say they are out of their depth

I will end with: Don’t make the Left into a single issue politic, I.E. issues of gender. Especially since even within the left there are debates. By stroking such a broad brush, you funnel people to the right. Contd
