Mayor of extraordinarily expensive and racially segregated Palo Alto, Tom Dubois (), is worried about state housing legislation: "any housing that does emerge ends up housing only the highest wage-earners, not those who need it most."

Same stasis in Vancouver as most big California cities. Good thread.

I know staff work diligently at direction of council & I imagine many staff working on this can't afford these homes either. It just seems like a whole generation & more are getting pushed out while we're muddling over engaging about MAYBE doing something MAYBE later 10/

⬇️ Excellent 🧵 on how CA cities can/will use tax policy to gut housing elements on back end. San Francisco has a "no net loss of financial feasibility" commitment in its HE, but I haven't seen this in other cities' plans. The concept is ripe for legislation.

Imagine thinking you could get the majority of a legislative body anywhere in America to approve this.

Price controls on every apartment is my proposal. 1 bedroom apartments should be $50 a month. The government will enforce it and imprison anybody they find violating it.

Land Value Tax would fix this I introduced AB 362 to officially study the benefits/impacts of a statewide land value tax which would provide fairer assessments, boost housing supply, and give more freedom to landowners to build on properties without the fear of increasing taxes

"EVERYBODY WORKS BUT THE VACANT LOT"
I paid $3600. for this lot and will hold it ‘till I get $6000. The profit is unearned increment made possible by the presence of this community and the enterprise of its people. I take the profit without earning it. For the remedy read

I am excited to announce that I was appointed to the MV City Council last night! I am so thankful for the all the support that I have received & grateful to the council for this opportunity! There is so much I want to say, but I will take some time to gather my thoughts.

This is it! HCD will review Bay Area cities to see if they've zoned for new housing in wealthy areas. If a city fails, their zoning will be suspended and unlimited height & density at >20% affordable housing can be approved anywhere. Many are about to fail

It's unclear what motivated the cashier—who was identified as Latino—to refuse service to the SFPD. But it's not the first time a local restaurant has been criticized for turning cops away amidst national outrage over police brutality. sfstandard.com/arts-culture/s

I dont think Americans realize how dystopian it is to get pulled over and effectively detained by a gov't agent with a gun who runs through your entire criminal history before issuing you a ticket (or worse) for a traffic violation versus just getting a ticket in the mail.

The reason we dont have traffic cameras unlike much of the world is: A) police unions lobby to keep them banned since it replaces police officers and penalizes police officers violating traffic laws & B) US motorists like to violate traffic laws and talk themselves out of tickets

When violently attacked my brother, the officer kicked him, threw him on the ground, and held him down in a chokehold. The officer claims he ordered my brother “multiple times” to put his hands behind his back. How would someone physically comply in this scenario? 🧵

A particularly insidious aspect of the sound in the video is the cops constantly shouting as if Nichols is not complying when in fact he is very obviously complying and they are beating him.

Anyone who looks deeply into the MUTCD or AASTO green guide is gobsmacked by the banality of evil on every page. DOTs require 5 pedestrian deaths/injuries per intersection per year before they can consider inconveniencing a motorist with a stoplight. I am not making this up.

The way the American built environment is designed to make drinking & driving almost always the path of least resistance is one of those quietly monstrous things you can’t unsee when you realize it. We require bars to build parking lots & act surprised when people die.

It's not about whether you personally want to or need to drive. It’s about understanding the simple truth that in cities, if everyone tries to move by car, no one moves much at all. So the more of us that are enticed to walk, bike & take transit, the better it is for EVERYONE.

AHF declined our repeated requests for an interview with their CEO.They refused to answer detailed questions in writing. It's pretty rich of them to say we're not telling their "story fairly" even as we quote their own legal briefs extensively in the story!latimes.com/homeless-housi

People HATE condos. Especially a skyscraper like this one which contains 450 new units. This is what it would look like if those ppl bought up 450 single family homes in rapidly gentrifying East Austin instead. Fight displacement by building luxury condos.
