In 1992 a @Stanford assistant dean was convicted of crimes that sexually exploited multiple Black female students. At the time, Stanford issued a statement that it "permanently severed" contact with him. It didn't. After 30 years a victim speaks out:https://bit.ly/3vWJjJK

Recently I was contacted by several alumni who were impacted and victimized complaining that not only had @Stanford not permanently severed its contact with the perpetrator, it had recently laid a brick on campus with his name on it commemorating his contribution to Stanford.pic.twitter.com/IvwDNWQ34F

Together with @palumboliu, I advocated to @Stanford to finally honor its commitment made in 1992 through a public press release to permanently sever contact with this individual. After a lengthy back and forth with the Provost the brick was removed and the commitment honored.pic.twitter.com/qe5uKYE0Xn

The facts are completely damning. According to multiple published reports, the perpetrator lured Black female students into his campus apartment for fully clothed "photoshoots," ostensibly to illustrate a book he he was writing.

In fact, the perpetrator used a hidden video camera to secretly record the women as they changed. He reportedly instructed them to bring several outfits he prescribed including “short sundresses” and “high heels” and to change in a supposedly private room he provided.

One student discovered the hidden camera. Distraught, she entered his apartment when he was not home to search for videos of herself. She discovered a cache of videos of undressed students including of her in a drawer full of “sex toys and condoms” and went to the police.

The perpetrator at first denied the charges, then changed his story to say that the videos were taken so that he could correct the lighting of his photos, then changed his story again and blamed his conduct on overwork.

The crime was even more damaging because he victimized undergraduate women of color from a marginalized community. In my view, the impacts to the entire Stanford community of this kind of betrayal of trust and sexual exploitation by an Assistant Dean are severe and lasting.

Given the severity of the conduct and the criminal conviction, it was entirely appropriate in my view that in 1992 Stanford publicly committed to the victims that the University would permanently sever contact with this perpetrator. But they didn't. @StanfordDailypic.twitter.com/8MvSmUvc9w

To the credit of Provost Persis Drell, when I notified her of this situation and provided her with the many media stories documenting both the crime and Stanford's public commitment to permanently sever contact with the perpetrator, she removed the brick and took other actions.

However, it is important to ask why the intervention of two faculty members was necessary to stop this institutional betrayal of the victims and their parents. How did we end up with a brick with the perpetrator's name on it planted on campus? How can we ensure it won't recur?

How can we get @Stanford to value women of color and take the intersectional harms that they experience seriously? It is alarming that we were doing better in some ways in 1992 than we are doing today. That is why it is important that this be recorded in public now.

I am grateful to the courage of @mamidok and @deardrewdixon who decided to hold @Stanford accountable for its failure to honor its own public commitment. And I want to know what @Stanford is going to do to increase its commitment to survivors, especially survivors of color.pic.twitter.com/925KPsnRcc
