Too bad. Congressional term limits are a big step forward to end the current insanity of career lawmakers being bought and sold to the highest bidder.

Reconsidering, I will agree w/ Senator Schumer on this point. However, I’m strongly opposed to lifetime salaries & benefits & we must get rid of lobbying which would deal with a majority of the problems.

He has a point, but there should still be term limits. It would go a long way towards really draining the swamp.

The longer in the position, the closer to corrupt.

I agree with him. The problem really is is campaign finance. Term limits would oust really good ppl we need to keep in office. We need some deep knowledge about how govt works best.
-
Reasonable term limits. Congress wasn't ever meant to be a 30 year career. All they think about is getting reelected and vote to do so. If they know after serving 3 terms, they are done, might help without losing experienced people all at once.
-
I disagree. Ppl who have long careers get good at what they do. We need ways to oust bad actors thru elections. Remove ppl who aren't acting in public interest. But running campaigns is too expensive. Campaign finance reform esp overturning citizens united w/law is needed
-
I believe that reasonable term limits will also limit the lobbyist control of congress. They weren't elected, but are pretty much running our congress.
-
Only regulations on lobbying will dim their influence. Seriously. It will just get worse because ppl from legislature will leave office w/ a lobbying job lined up Term limits are bad.
-
And, I am sure you have good points to share, but it means you have an opinion and I have one too. Nobody should make a lifelong career of being a member of congress. Power is corrupting over the long term. We shouldn't encourage it in public officials.
-
Money is corrupting. Unlimited dark money and corporate money and church money and bundled money and pacs and super pacs. We need campaign finance reform not term limits.

Weirdly, as people in Congress get "better" at their jobs less and less actual work gets done...

Everyone gets better with tenure, but if this is better for this Congress after 3 consecutive shutdowns, it's time to go. We really need a complete overhaul.

I oppose term limits. The last thing I want is a bunch of novice legislators getting manipulated by experienced lobbyists and big money donors.
-
Explain how the current system where politicians sell their souls to billionaires for life is better. I don't see it.
-
Novices are going raise money from billionaires also. Not sure how term limits would reduce the influence of big donors
-
Corruption doesn't happen in a day or even in 1 term. Term limits change the calculus and keep fresh blood circulating through our system.
-
Is there any evidence to support that assertion? If a novice gets big bucks from a donor why wouldn’t they tend to favor that donor?
-
Omg, you're serious... Have you been living under a rock? The proof is in the utter lack of legislative pudding. Let's assume that a billionaire does corrupt a politician before he even gets in office somehow, is it better for that person to be term limited? Or to stay forever?
