Internal emails show Grassley staff asking Debbie Ramirez’s attorneys six times for evidence of her claims to New Yorker on Kavanaugh. They also show Dem aide raising concerns that GOP was seeking precondition before having a call - all while Ramirez’s counsel calls for FBI probe

Basically this shows GOP at a standstill with Debbie Ramirez’s attorneys, as Rs say they haven’t been given any evidence to back her claims and her side saying they’re refusing to back an FBI probe. It’s a clear sign the committee won’t get to hear Ramirez’s story before votes

You got that backwards. The women are the ones asking for the FBI investigation. Lying to the FBI is a crime so Kavanaugh and the GOP are refusing.

Lying to Congress, incl staff or investigators conducting interviews on behalf of a Congressional Cmte investigation, is just as much a crime. Demanding FBI involvement is a delaying tactic, and cover for Dems' refusal to participate in or cooperate with investigations under way.

Nope. You can lie to Congress if not under oath and will be a dirt bag but not a criminal. Congressional staff investigators are not impartial. If GOP had done the right thing immediately it would be done by now. They are the time wasters.

My understanding: All circumstances otherwise equal, lying to an FBI background checker vs lying to someone doing the same thing on behalf of Congress; these are completely equivalent as to any and all possible legal consequences or lack thereof.

I stand corrected. Found 18 U.S.C. § 1001 which makes it a crime to “knowingly & willfully . . . make[] any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation” in “any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch” of govmt
