NEW: Kavanaugh said in 2013 that presidents can ignore laws they view as unconstitutional, defending signing statements. Dems have demanded his staff secretary records, citing Kavanaugh and signing statements. Rs say staff secretary not involved in policy.https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/06/politics/brett-kavanaugh-president-ignore-laws-unconstitutional/index.html …

Kavanaugh noted that if a president signs a bill "and says these certain provisions in here are unconstitutional, and we're not going to follow those provisions, that is a traditional exercise of power by Presidents."

That’s wrong. I’m surprised that any SCOTUS nominee wouldn’t know a president can’t change a law after it has been signed into law. That is up to Congress. The president’s duty is to uphold all laws whether he likes them or not. #NoKavanaugh

The very definition of the executive branch is to uphold the law. (Even if you don’t like them)

How are signing statements any different than the line item veto that the Supreme Court said was unconstitutional? This is big and bad.

Trump is distracting us from the SCOTUS vote. Kavanaugh cannot be fully vetted unless all his background documents which are being withheld by the Republicans are released it’s up to us to fight for this CALL YOUR REPS We’re going to get stuck with this idiot for 30+ years!!

Name some examples of Presidents traditionally exercising that power. Congress makes the laws. Line item veto is unconstitutional. Kavanaugh is worse than I thought.

But isn't a signing statement only allowed when a president is signing a bill into law? There's no provision for deciding after the fact, is there? So a president can't decide that a bill signed into law 20 years ago (or even 2 years ago) no longer applies because ... ?

Highly controversial, no one has litigated whether the signing statement has any legal standing whatsoever. Worringly, it gives more power to the President.
