Sen. Jeff Flake calls on GOP leaders to speak out and condemn Trump’s comments downplaying Kim Jong Un’s atrocities, saying “it turns our values upside down” that the “the president speaks fondly of dictators” regularly. “I wish that our leadership would say more,” he told us.

Sen. John Kennedy defended Trump: “I think the president is trying to negotiate ... I think anybody who has an intellect above a single cell organism understands that when you’re trying to negotiate a deal, you don’t walk in and slap your opponent and call him an ignorant slut.”

So there’s no middle ground between slapping and insulting someone and inappropriately showering them with praise and flattery?

But you also don't have to call a murderous dictator honorable. In fact, you don't have to call him anything but negotiate and verify. Ask yourself: why did Trump have a private meeting with Kim and without notes or witnesses? What did he receive in return?

And anyone who has an intellect above a single cell organism understands that offering your counterpart something without asking anything (anything at all) in return isn't making a deal, he's giving a present. Which is what Trump did.

POTUS basically slapped our allies while saying he's "negotiating" better trade agreements. I guess this philosophy only applies when negotiating with enemies?

I've generally found @SenJohnKennedy to be reasonable and respectful, even though I disagree with him on many policy issues. In this instance, however, he is dead wrong.
