Buried in the shutdown news/Trump presser today is the fact that the GOP-led Senate is set to debate Syria policy on the floor next week, giving senators a chance to attempt to tie Trump’s hands on withdrawal and express their opposition to his moves

The fact that aides are talking is not necessarily a good sign; staff-level talks can only go so far. Deals require principles to come together, and there's no willingness to do so. And as is abundantly clear, WH aides clearly don't speak for Trump.

Trump just repeated the widely debunked lie that lots of terrorists have entered through the US-Mexico border. It's totally wrong, and the administration hasn't ever proven it. (BTW: The most famous border incident with a terrorist happened at the Canadian border in 1999.)

Trump's confusing message: He claims he can declare a national emergency and build wall himself; Mexico is paying for it through a trade deal that hasn't been approved by Congress; and the wall is already being built. But he wants Congress to appropriate $5 billion for the wall
