I renamed an image to "foo.png", and when I pressed OK it's name appeared as "foo.png.png". So I removed one ".png" and now it's just "foo".

So then in the Finder preferences I found the "Show all filename extensions" checkbox and checked it. My file is still just shown as "foo".

It turns out that the file itself has a seperate "Show file extension" option in the info pane. Where is that preference stored? Who knows.

@nicklockwood I would guess it’s stored in an extended attribute on the file. Try xattr -l foo.png.0 replies 0 retweets 1 like
@olebegemann @nicklockwood It predates xattrs so maybe in catalog info.
