      Just noticed that Gestalt was deprecated in 10.8. This makes me sad.

      @ccgus As a result, there's no supported API in 10.8 to get the OS version. Also: what else were you still using Gestalt() for!?

      @grynspan @ccgus sysctl(3) with the kern.osrelease argument gets you the kernel version, from which you can compute the OS version.

      @rbrockerhoff Do you have an algorithm or table?

          @mjtsai @rbrockerhoff it's easier than that, for example, if (NSAppKitVersionNumber < NSAppKitVersionNumber10_7) { } else { }

          @kongtomorrow That doesn’t work when you care about the full 10.x.y version (e.g. to compare against when you know a bug was fixed).

          @mjtsai NSAppKitVersionNumber10_4_7 !

          @kongtomorrow Yes, now observe how many of them are missing.

          @mjtsai true, I guess it depends where your bug is. there's only a number missing if AppKit didn't rev, which usually means small release.

          @mjtsai for all past & current, kern.version returns x.y.z and OS X version will be 10.(x-4).y. Not sure about z though.

          @rbrockerhoff @mjtsai @ccgus Aha: And “sw_vers -productVersion” seems to be a documented, command line means of obtaining this.

          @danielpunkass @rbrockerhoff @mjtsai @ccgus Sure, but shelling out for something like that is sloppy.

          @marczak @rbrockerhoff @mjtsai @ccgus I don’t see a non-sloppy solution here, do you? :)

          @danielpunkass @marczak @mjtsai @ccgus so what API does sw_vers call...?

          @rbrockerhoff @danielpunkass @marczak @ccgus It just reads SystemVersion.plist.

          @mjtsai @rbrockerhoff @danielpunkass @ccgus Right. Which is also easily editable. http://yfrog.com/esj3wiewj
