@tom__ I can’t vouch for that shell script, but the basic technique still works. Note that Mail’s pref file is now in its sandbox container.

@mjtsai OK, thank you, will do some digging. Itching to find a way to have Mail back into [classic-based] widescreen mode (with columns)! :)
