  2. I’m wondering whether Romney would’ve felt secure enough to vote for conviction if hadn’t revealed Trump’s remarkable weakness in Utah in the ‘16 election. Either way, seems like some Utah GOPers are the only folks thinking about the party’s viability post-Trump

  5. No tweet that I can remember has demonstrated Glenn Greenwald’s penchant for hyperbole more than this one about the Iowa Democratic Party caucus.

I dunno man, I think Bush v Gore was a little more credibility damaging than a couple days delay in a volunteer driven effort to crunch very complicated numbers in a state that has like 1% of the total Democratic Primary delegates.

  8. In terms of "Political Time" ( knows what's up), Romney would've fit the mold of a "disjunctive president" who presides over party fracture and struggles to express a clear identity & hold together political programs. Maybe we'd be in the same place, w/ a 4 year delay

  9. personally, I'm skeptical Mitt would've had the backbone to fend off any of Trumpism as POTUS, and would've let it develop as much as the Bushes did. And broader economic/cultural/technological/etc. trends would be the same. Still, parties are often shaped by their presidents

  10. here's a pointless provocation: if Mitt were elected in '12, would the GOP be the same? Would Trumpy elements have still festered, frustrated by Mitt's slower pace and reserved persona? Would winning the WH have tamped down (or even delayed) the most vitriolic elements?

As a child, I remember hearing Limbaugh on my mother’s car radio. Too young to understand, I still resisted his words, the waves of haste and hate. His words crashed against me. But they also swept around me, beyond the shore, into homes, into lungs, leaving resentful corpses.

Language matters and all that, but my kid is not fooled. I say “consequence” he says “punishment.” I say “house job” he says “chore.” I call it “school” and he launches into a rant about “neoliberal surveillance society as a control mechanism designed to police creativity.”

One position I’ve seen virtually no one entertain yet: that a buncha midwesterners really liked Pete Buttigieg. I think folks ought to consider the possibility that maybe —maybe— his showing wasn’t a conspiracy, and what that would mean.

Susan Collins, shockingly, has found a technicality that will allow her to completely enable Donald Trump.
