  1. Just realized ’s fantastic and horrifying new book ELECTION MELTDOWN came out today ... in the midst of an election meltdown. Read it to prepare for the madness to come:

  2. A tiny part of me wanted to get excited about the first openly gay candidate possibly winning the Iowa caucus. Then I turned on Pete's second not-a-victory speech and that part of me died for good.

Something for the kids, though: If Democrats' margin was 1 percent higher in 2016, today would be about the shitshow in Iowa wherein Kid Rock tore off Rand Paul's arm rather than accept that Des Moines just ain't ready for that lonely road of faith

  4. Collins' speech just now is an excellent illustration of why no president will ever be removed. Partisanship has corrupted an already hazy and vulnerable process. Members of the president's party can always say his actions were bad, but not THAT bad.

  5. And yet—this is the incredible part—FedSoc STILL presents itself as an underdog, an aggrieved victim of a liberal judiciary; its members demand affirmative action for conservative law professors; and it insists that it's merely an apolitical debate club. Don't get gaslighted.

  6. DeSantis uses FedSoc support as THE "singular test" for judicial appointees. Four members of the U.S. Supreme Court are active FedSoc boosters. FedSoc's leader is Trump's closest advisor on judicial nominations. Most of Trump's appellate appointees are FedSoc members.

  7. The Justice Department cites Joe Arpaio's investigation into Obama's birth certificate as an example of state oversight of the president gone awry. I genuinely believe the DOJ is trolling us.

  8. This opinion is unhinged. The FedSoc judge claims that the legislature cannot abolish cash bail for certain offenses, because HE has final authority "to control the appearance of a defendant" however he chooses. Just a totally lawless power grab. This should be an outrage.

  9. This is so humiliating. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also uses "Federalist Society views" as the "singular test" for judicial candidates. You simply have to support FedSoc to get appointed to the bench in Florida today.

. on meeting w/ CBP about reported issues weeks ago at the border in Washington: "For the first time, we were able to hear that there was indeed a breach of protocol and that a large number of Iranian Americans were inappropriately targeted."

Not sure that's the right choice of inspiration given that Profiles in Courage praises the corrupt senator who voted to acquit Andrew Johnson in exchange for presidential favors and possibly a bribe:

The funniest thing about this great report is that it's quite easy to set up a dark money slush fund legally—just ask Leonard Leo!—but Susan Collins' mystery supporters may have messed up and broken the law.

Imagine the weeks-long national debate we’d be having about elites and the heartland if Obama did that.

    * ”law and order” not applicable to crimes committed by Trump, the unitary executive theory means presidential crimes are actually legal.

I guess I’m glad that Trump is touting the First Step Act as an accomplishment—it is!—but personnel is policy and Trump’s personnel are racist “law and order” dinosaurs who want black people to rot in prison
