If you hate Woodrow Wilson as much as I do—and you should—I urge you to read this horrific and enthralling account his pathetic post-stroke presidency, when his bottomless arrogance prevented him from resigning as he pretended to run the government. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0743211588/?tag=slatmaga-20 …https://twitter.com/awprokop/status/1158733942213816326 …

The extent of Wilson's illness, and the ensuing cover-up, are absolutely shocking. He was profoundly incapacitated yet conspired with his second wife—a hideous person, racist and imperious and power-hungry—to stay in office as the government and the country collapsed around him.

There is a widespread belief that Wilson deserves admiration for sticking to his principles and refusing to compromise over the League of Nations. That belief is dead wrong. Wilson killed the League by rejecting a few sensible compromises. And he did it because he was deranged.

It is absurd that Henry Cabot Lodge is painted as the villain in the fight over the League of Nations. He proffered compromise at every turn. It was Wilson—utterly debilitated yet haughty as ever—who refused to let Senate Democrats offer any concessions. He destroyed the League.

Senate Democrats were eager to vote for a compromise that gave Wilson almost everything he wanted but reaffirmed Congress' authority to declare war. Wilson instead told them to tank the treaty. It was an act of breathtaking hubris that captures his essence. He was a horrible man.

Agreed, and I give most of the credit for the rethinking of Wilson to Jonah @JonahNRO and his book Liberal Fascism.

I think of Wilson so often these days, I guess because trump seems similarly mentally-impaired—whether from dementia, bad education, or a low IQ, I can’t say—while others cover for him.

        Replying to @374drew @JonahNro and

Before Liberal Fascism I only though of Wilson for two things: 1. The League of Nations 2. WFB quoting him approvingly. Something like "the state can only do for you what it can do to you."
