Imagine the weeks-long national debate we’d be having about elites and the heartland if Obama did that.

  4. * ”law and order” not applicable to crimes committed by Trump, the unitary executive theory means presidential crimes are actually legal.

  5. I guess I’m glad that Trump is touting the First Step Act as an accomplishment—it is!—but personnel is policy and Trump’s personnel are racist “law and order” dinosaurs who want black people to rot in prison

Can’t quite believe we’re at a point where Trump highlighted criminal justice reform and clemency in his ad in the Super Bowl. Not sure what to say other than this shows criminal justice reform can be a winning issue for anyone.

  9. Follow-ups: A. I failed to convince the stranger that ranked-choice voting is good. B. I misread the timetable and it turned out the bus had already departed.

  10. A separate dream last night involved me trying to read a somewhat confusing bus timetable. That was the whole dream. ☹️

  11. I wish I were making this up but the sad fact is that my dreams are relentlessly, unforgivably boring.

  12. Here's another one: I dreamt last night that I met someone at a party who opposed ranked-choice voting, and I spent the rest of the dream explaining to him why ranked-choice voting is actually good.

  13. Framing super PACs as mere support "from people who share our values" means tacitly accepting the premise of Citizens United—that plutocrats and corporations simply want to engage in political expression to support candidates. Which is false. They want to purchase candidates.

  14. Super PACs are not "support that is coming in from people who share our values." They are conduits for ultra-wealthy donors and corporations who want to get around contribution limits and buy out candidates with massive sums of cash.

But the lawyer class propping the GOP up would like you to believe they are constitutionalists who value the Rule of Law.

No one is entirely safe from ICE and CBP, which have repeatedly (and illegally) detained U.S. citizens for no good reason, but this story is especially appalling. Going after an active duty member of the U.S. military—I mean, come on.

By acquitting Trump, Senate Republicans have set a precedent that will permanently corrupt the impeachment process. No president will ever be removed from office. Impeachment may still serve as a symbolic condemnation. But removal is off the table.
