My love letter to underrepresented people in the workplace who are experiencing tokenism or being "the only" at their company: 1. You do not have to shoulder the burden to educate others on "Diversity & Inclusion" (unless you're hired to do so) or your lived experiences.

  2. When you expect your Head of Diversity to champion/market your company as the best place to work for underrepresented people without real change, know that that burden can feel oppressive. Work to close the cognitive dissonance first, then authentic advocacy will follow.

I had a lady come up to me after a talk and tell me she was sorry. I asked her why.. She said I should have written this book for you. I should have written it for your generation. She read and cried the same tears I cried in corporate. We hugged. 🖤

Fear of coronavirus is fueling racist sentiment toward East Asians; I spoke to people who fielded suspicious looks & nasty comments. Derogatory jokes gathered steam online, drawing on age-old racist tropes associating Chinese people w disease & dirty food

This halftime show was peak Miami: it showed the vibrancy of our community, shed light on 🇵🇷 & kids in cages, but also erased black voices... while I’m glad to see our culture represented on a Natl stage, I can’t help but ask at what cost?

And.. the real deal is what happens now. What does dismantling systemic oppression by white people look like?

Today during the Super Bowl, the National Football League and its allies will sanitize and co-opt a black protest movement. I refuse to watch that happen before my eyes as if it’s all good. Some things are worth more than an afternoon of football.

In the Jim Crow South, Negroes who declined to step into the street when encountering whites on the sidewalk were charged with “incivility” that was punishable by death.

Last night in my dream, taught me how to dance. My partner demanded I show him the moves and our Sunday is off to a hilarious start. What are y’all doing today instead of watching the ?

Why do American newspapers have live-updating news feeds about a virus that has killed zero Americans, but no constantly-updated feed about drivers killing 100 Americans a day? Should we call it Corollavirus? Would that help?

I’ve been a vegetarian for over 10 years. I believe animals should be treated with respect. I also believe it’s WILDLY inappropriate to compare a human black man to animals. Did not think about the long (and ongoing) history of racists doing this? Or did they just not care?
