Clearly a false statement by @mjg59 — Linux-Libre will tell the user what non-free firmware was unable to be loaded. But it is clearly more important to load non-free firmware than actually rejecting software that subjugates computer users...

No, the 4.16 script explicitly removes any code that suggests that the user update their microcode, even if the reason to do so is for security. It does so even if the driver in question never actually loads any non-free microcode.

But... if you don't install the microcode *updates*... you're still running the same non-free software o.0

Yes, when if it's already flashed to the CPU it's hardware and thus no problem. But you don't want to flash new stuff, since that hasn't evolved to hardware yet! I'm all for libre, but that's insane.

Instead, they should’ve been told they’re running on insecure proprietary hardware, not designed for security, a mysterious blackbox, never independently audited, and that the microcode updates are not a real fix but just an ad hoc patch to defer lawsuits!

Didn’t Intel also disband the ‘formal verification testing’ teams in Oregon? Something about the modern CPU being too expensive to formally verify. (I’m a layperson only repeating press reports)
