My heart is bursting. On the eve of my first child's birth, my dad - who's been in prison nearly my entire life - was granted clemency. He never intended harm, yet his crime devastated many families. My heart breaks for the families that can never get their loved ones back.

This is the greatest news, I’m so incredibly happy for you! I worked with David on the AIDS Peer Education program at Great Meadow and he’s one of the best humans I’ve ever met. All the best to your family

The responses to this supportive note are emblematic of what’s broken in our society. The inappropriate and uninformed rage of people who have never met David levied against someone who’s opinion is based on actual experience, knowledge and fact. 1/3

David did not murder anyone, but he was an accessory to a crime and he has accepted responsibility for his involvement. Through contrition, service to others and 40 years of confinement he has paid his debt to society yet the online righteous are immune to those facts. 2/3
