    For most of the people we cover, there’s no record of their feelings on their “mixedness”, or even if they considered themselves mixed. However, Hughes lived during a time when views on race were shifting in the US. He touched on his racial background in many of his works.

    As a fun side note, Hughes was a columnist for the Chicago Defender for 20 years. The same newspaper that was influential in funding Bessie Coleman’s flight training.

    Kicking off Black History Month with an icon of Mixed History! was born in 1902. He was of African-American, white, and Native American descent. An accomplished writer and activist, Hughes became one of the most influential leaders of the Harlem Renaissance.

    Bessie Coleman was born in 1892 in Texas. She was the first woman of African-American descent and the first of Native-American descent to earn a pilot license. She later became a popular stunt flier in the US and was known as “Queen Bess”.

    Mine was The History of Rome by . Even after all this time, it remains the greatest history podcast there is, in my opinion. I’ve been hooked on history podcasts ever since!

    This engraving was based on a drawing completed by John Poole (or possibly his son Thomas). It shows Cuffe’s profile above his ship, the “Traveller”. The ship is shown between the shores of New England and Sierra Leone.

    After a little more research I’ve realized the picture I shared of Paul Cuffe may not actually be him. Many people assume it’s a painting of him, but there isn’t any proof. However, this silhouette is likely the most accurate depiction of him.
