With dependencies you have two deadlines - minimum, when the dependent task can kick off and then e3/alpha/beta/rc (and most likely two separate "engagement" estimates)

hold on, actually you can do a lot of scoping without dependencies! Answering the question “is this out of scope?” can be done without dependencies. Answering the question “can it be done before deadline” needs dependencies. The former is the important question.
