The Nebraska contribution to our Secrets of the Coaching Carousel series. Everything that happened 17 years ago in those 41 days — Steve Pederson’s NFL Plan A, why he pursued Houston Nutt and the coach who came oh, so close to saying yes. Here it is.

Also heard from new Nebraska safety DeShon Singleton, who’s open to the idea of an offense-vs-defense spring game on Saturday. “Don’t let ‘em score,” he said of the objective. “Gotta put up an egg.”

Interviews today with Scott Frost and new faces Tommi Hill, Trey Palmer and Anthony Grant. The transfers brought a lot of swag this spring at Nebraska, perhaps none more than Palmer, the WR transfer from LSU. “You’ve gotta be a dog in this sport,” Palmer said. “It’s in me.”

Texas A&M signing 7 top-100 recruits on the D-line in one class is truly incredible. Elijah Robinson and Terry Price are pretty darn good at their jobs. Gonna be fun to watch this crew develop.

Happy 65th birthday to Nebraska offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. He could use a healthy group of tight ends and fewer injuries overall on offense. But if not, his offense is a gift to the Huskers. “It feels like he’s got an answer to everything.”

Nebraska OC Mark Whipple on the addition of his son, Austin, as an offensive quality control coach: “It’s a good buffer.” The younger Whipple played QB at UMass. He understands the concepts and helps bridge any communication gaps between his dad and the quarterbacks.

What’s happening in the trenches this spring at Nebraska? Coaches were blunt this week about the improvement needed to develop depth up front on defense. On the O-line, the reports are all good, which doesn’t tell the full story.

Nebraska’s most pressing concern of the offseason has come into focus since the Huskers resumed practice last week after spring break. Are they well equipped at the line of scrimmage? On both sides. It’s a big question with bigger consequences.

Brutal. But at least they made it to all of those moments. I can think of a few schools that would love the opportunity to be devastated over and over like that.

Defenders Mosai Newsom and Braxton Clark are part of the new core of defensive leadership that Nebraska coordinator Erik Chinander has pushed to take on increased roles. “It’s our time to play football,” Newsom said.

Just wrapped Creighton interviews. One of the best parts - as the starters answered questions, their teammates watched + gave an ovation when it ended. That scene says what this group is about - one collective unit working together, while also fully aware of their historic run.
