EVERYTHING a President does, he "believes will help him get elected", and our Constitution makes it that way by making his office an elective office subject to the people. Trying to get reelected is not an impeachable offense.

By this logic the president could literally pay someone to murder his opponent and that could not be impeachable, as long as the president believes his reelection is the public interest
