What‘s something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?

HR departments exist to keep up with employment legislation and make sure the company doesn't breach it/ can't be sued for breaching it. That's it. That's why companies spend money on them. Not for the benefit of employees.
-
There are some incredible companies out there who have HR teams that work very hard to provide benefits in an attempt to make their employee’s lives better. I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences, but they aren’t universally bad. Hoping you find something better out there soon!!
-
Yeah I know but I was asked to give a comment based on my experience and I did. I worked in the field as one of the good guys. So hope things are progressing and for allowing me to answer this comment with my experience.

Companies with HR departments like John is describing are companies that currently find it profitable to give their employees certain benefits. They are a small percentage of employers and their policies/attitudes towards their staff are always subject to change.

As in as soon as you have any thing - as minor as workman’s comp to sexual harassment. HR circles the wagons even if you’re one of them. I can’t imagine working at big corps like Fox or CBS- hushing people up. There are good people in HR- but in the end they protect enployER
-
I respectfully disagree, especially as HR continues to branch out into programs (OD) which is 100% for employees. And I work for one of the largest employers in my province. But in
, so I don’t know American labor laws etc. -
Yes there are awesome aspects of HR- that is the retention shiny object part - they volunteer - they do al kinds of motivational employee stuff. They are there to protect the company. I said be careful when you have a grievance for a reason.

In my experience, they forget they are dealing with humans. HELLO??? Remember what the ‘H’ stands for?

When my Mom was killed in a car accident, the HR manager at the hospital kept my position open for me for 6 weeks while I was out. I had just started there and had no PTO time. She set it up so people could donate their PTO for me. She sure didn't have to.

I've been working for 37 years. HR works for the company, never for the staff. Never.

"Resources" in the name is already not so subtle hint. You are a resource, along with printer paper and company vehicle.

I worked for a major corporation, and yup, HR is there for the benefit of the company. Company/HR screwed me in the same way they did other women in my division. They sued and got big settlements a few yrs later. Me? Lost my house, marriage & sanity.
