What‘s something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?

I always thought this but the Uber harassment case really opened my eyes to how HR departments are evil. I thought their job was to protect a company from lawsuits but they were an accomplice to the sexual harassment by that creepy engineer. Outright lied to victims to enable him
-
Yes-my company allowed a high up 23 yr vet who taught ethics mandatory to the company beat 7 investigations. 2 for not sole sourcing and hiring friends with 100K plus in contracts 2 SH that he beat -HR made the victims the enemy until my case. Where I had proof-he was walked out
-
That astounds me! I get protecting the CEO in a company where the ceo equals the company- but for just some random schmuck? Why? They treat the victims like disposable cogs, why not the assailants?
-
This is why my experience affords me the wisdom to understand why women have chosen to not go to HR or file a complaint against anyone in a larg(ER)companies affluent men/women/coaches/anchors/NDA's Women almost have no choice but to shut up. NASA was our only customer-CYA.

computer. He for every single day for 7 years had a spreadsheet that showed his sexual relations. Each date had a column. It was color coded. It showed if he had sex. 3 Different way. Sex with wife, mistress, self pleasure. Thankfully IT did a sweep and found the spreadsheet
-
That is insane!!

I know... years of "grooming" sex talk in the office he thought maybe I'd be fine. He did ask me if it bothered me and I told him yes-I went down hall to LEGAL dept my gal pals that knew the yrs of crap and told them the story. The calmed me but said not worth to pursue. LEGAL!!
-
They were part of my witness testimony ultimately backed my story but they knew how security legal and HR worked and thankful this idiot didn't take down the spreadsheet even after I told him I was upset with it. I had to make a split decision quick to report this. It was crazy

It depends on the size. If it’s a large publicly owned one, I agree. Smaller companies ‘ HR try to keep talent & iron problems out.
-
NO - you are wrong
-
HR departments exist to keep up with employment legislation and make sure the company doesn't breach it/ can't be sued for breaching it. That's it. That's why companies spend money on them. Not for the benefit of employees.
-
There are some incredible companies out there who have HR teams that work very hard to provide benefits in an attempt to make their employee’s lives better. I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences, but they aren’t universally bad. Hoping you find something better out there soon!!
-
Yeah I know but I was asked to give a comment based on my experience and I did. I worked in the field as one of the good guys. So hope things are progressing and for allowing me to answer this comment with my experience.
-
Companies with HR departments like John is describing are companies that currently find it profitable to give their employees certain benefits. They are a small percentage of employers and their policies/attitudes towards their staff are always subject to change.
-
As in as soon as you have any thing - as minor as workman’s comp to sexual harassment. HR circles the wagons even if you’re one of them. I can’t imagine working at big corps like Fox or CBS- hushing people up. There are good people in HR- but in the end they protect enployER
-
I respectfully disagree, especially as HR continues to branch out into programs (OD) which is 100% for employees. And I work for one of the largest employers in my province. But in

Carrie, I understand exactly what you are talking about. HR is solely for the company and to make sure they come out looking as good as they can. And there are choice people who will take your "off the record" grievances and "off the record" them with that same person.
-
Absolutely! So many are offended b/c they know people or have had good interactions in HR and I know that because I worked there also. I loved my job I loved all of the good we did. When it came down to protecting me-even those "off the record" talks weren't. I won but at a price

I try and tell colleagues this but some people just don't like to believe it. Even the name itself is a huge tell if you pay attention. What do you do with a resource (e.g. coal, gas, oil, wood, food), you use it up to achieve an end. Human Resource?
-
It's deep. I worked in HR A GOOD GUY .PRO COMPANY.OUR HR was almost 500 large. Believe me they're wonderful people who ARE doing their best for people. In the end your grievance is an attack. They prove against lawsuits. I am proof. Positive proof. Oh God do I have stories
