It's almost overwhelming how much literacy has declined in the last few decades- people already take it for granted that the ability to do sustained reading is essentially optional- that audiobooks & physical books & "graphic novels" are essentially the same etc.

If you talk to old teachers, who have seen this decline in literacy first-hand- they'll often tell you how impossible it is to get people to read- even the "high achieving" students take shortcuts, can't be bothered with actually reading the whole book. "I'm too busy" they say.

Reminded me of this Jodorowsky quote "Maybe if literature was prohibited the same way as cocaine, people out of pure curiosity would try to get a couple of lines."
