You claimed "Humans generally won't solve a problem until not solving it is more painful than solving it." but this seems wrong to me. Every day I observe people act in ways which I don't believe to be pain-driven, 'generally' speaking

It depends on the level of maturity of the individual. Most people are children so they operate in a pain/pleasure paradigm. Mature people do the right thing regardless of pain/pleasure or personal consequences, because it is the right thing to do.

I think humans don't know what we want because we've been taught to ignore our wants, and do what we're told to do. I think if we really did what we wanted, we'd be BOTH self- and universe-centered. The universe guides us, but we can ignore that inner voice.
