I object to Stoicism being sold as an attitude enhancer, as a productivity boost, as mindset medicine. Stoicism is about establishing a truer way of relating with reality, whether it be agreeable or disagreeable; not a way to ward off or rationalize the disagreeable parts.

In the original post I referred to stress as the byproduct of taking responsibility - you don't choose to lessen the pain, but to bear it, and work with it. Removing it entirely, as is succumbing to it, both extremes, don't serve a purpose at all, apart from prolonging it.

Okay is it fair to say there are two primary modes of action: 1/ away from pain or 2/ toward joy? and building on that, do you believe it is possible to operate almost exclusively in the latter category?

We can grasp to things, push things away or live in a neutral state in-between. The trick is to live in the ladder - tricky because wanting to be there is grasping itself.
