Trying to control what is out of your control is not being responsible, it's being foolish, because you are literally not response-able. Nothing you do makes a difference. As Frankl said, "When we are no longer able to change a situation we are challenged to change ourselves."

If you cannot discern between what you are responsible for and what you are not then you can't be responsible. Letting go of things you can't control is done in order to enable you to focus on those you can. If the point of it were to reduce stress we'd be in hedonist territory.

I object to Stoicism being sold as an attitude enhancer, as a productivity boost, as mindset medicine. Stoicism is about establishing a truer way of relating with reality, whether it be agreeable or disagreeable; not a way to ward off or rationalize the disagreeable parts.

There is no virtue without responsibility, and if either of those were stress-free, everyone would be doing it. The fact that reality does not conform to our preferences is precisely what necessitates both.
