That's Jung, not Peterson. Peterson has used it mainly to illustrate the power of ideology. Jung's statement is much broader and not antithetical to Kazantzakis'. It's the same phenomenon viewed from opposite sides of the spectrum.

Memetic theory does a great job at describing this concept, what say you about memes?

I think it has its uses as a concept but is by no means overarching. A scientific framework by default cannot address human subjectivity.
