/ Naturally, human beings will gravitate towards whatever they perceive as a security to inoculate themselves against the chaos of their experience. In times of crisis, this is only amplified.

/ People will latch onto whatever makes them fill the void of significance and meaning, whatever allows them to feel security, whatever provides them with a sense of identity.

/ In itself, this is not bad. It is the process through which we mature and individuate. Unfortunately, for most, instead of each new iteration being a stepping stone, one iteration becomes the anchor point.

/ There are many forces at play that create the present situation. In its present form, this condition is unsustainable. It is like a simmer. Once the bubbles start popping, it will boil, and eventually spill over.

/ Society as a whole is a reflection of its people. And people, taken collectively, are at the level of maturity of a child, yet face an imminent crisis for which they are wholly unprepared.

/ This fundamental conflict is what most people are attempting to contend with, and what makes people lose their mind, psychologically speaking. I'm reminded of DFW describing the condition...

/ 'In the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship.'

/ So we all find something to worship as "the way". Gurus, preachers, prophets and saviors (worship figures) profit greatly from these times, and will continue to. People demand them.

/ And if they can't find them, they will make them. Again, the human need for stability and certainty cannot be underestimated. And when you are like a child, you look for a father figure.

/ To sum up, people in the West find themselves alone, and afraid. Lacking proper grounding in their own being, and proper participation in the community we call 'humanity'.

/ This will leave many people behind, and people don't like being left behind. They will first protest, and then get violent. They will turn against the coming tide but to little avail.

/ The cries for equality and acknowledgment are a case of misplaced identity as an externally defined property. It is not, but these people won't be able to see it. They will be taken advantage of.
