My grandad got me into judo when I was in high school. Told me there were ten levels of black belt proficiency

But that, in rare cases, there would be someone who surpassed the 10th level and they would graduate to the white belt- back to novice rank

Usually white denoted novice, but they could also be the highest ranked master. You can learn from everyone
